Some of the most iconic and notable Easter symbols come in the form of colorful eggs and fluffy bunnies. But what is the meaning behind them? Rooted in history but not found in any ancient scrolls or text, how did these symbols come to be?
The Easter Bunny
According to history.com, the exact origins of this mythical mammal are unclear, but rabbits, known to be prolific procreators, are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. But there are many theories surrounding the Easter bunny. According to some sources, the symbol of the rabbit stems from pagan tradition, specifically the festival of Eostre—a goddess of fertility whose animal symbol was a bunny. While others claim that the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit’s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests.
The egg, another ancient symbol of new life, has been associated with pagan festivals in order to celebrate springtime. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that can be dated back to at least the 13th century and today there are over 40 different ways and techniques to decorate those eggs depending on culture traditions and artistic ability.
Other Easter traditions include Easter candy! Behind Halloween, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America. Among the most popular sweet treats associated with this day are chocolate eggs and jelly beans.
According to a survey conducted by the National Confectioners Association, roughly 90% of Easter baskets will include chocolate or candy. Need to stock up for Easter on chocolate and sweet goodies?
