Nothing says holidays better than delicious sweets and snacks – and what’s better than a homemade pie, fresh out of the oven! Sure, you can go to any food store and buy a pie, but we all know they’re not going to be as delicious, not to mention as fresh, as your own handiwork that comes out of your own kitchen.
When thinking about holiday festivities and yummy pies, a lot of us think pumpkin. Now, how about changing it up a little bit, to celebrate another amazing flavor of the fall and winter – the wonderful apple!
We invite you to get creative and give this Apple Butter Pie a chance – it’s absolutely blissful, creamy, smooth, and bursting with lovely apple flavors.
Apple Butter Pie is also a great option for those who don’t necessarily like pumpkin pie. It’s still as sweetly rich, with gooey, smooth texture and perfect for Thanksgiving and other fall and winter celebrations.
Here’s a simple recipe to create your own amazing pie made with apple butter, such a wonderful seasonal ingredient. You can choose Weaver Nut’s traditional style Amish Maid Apple Butter, or Amish Maid Apple Butter No Sugar if you’re worried about sugar intake and want to keep it lighter. Also, if you’d like to make your pie using a different style apple butter, try Kauffman’s Apple Butter.
½ cup apple butter
1 egg, beaten
½ cup white sugar
1 Tbsp flour
2 cups evaporated milk
2 tsp apple pie spice (or substitute ground cinnamon)
1 frozen or refrigerated pie crust
Fresh whipped cream, optional
Cinnamon sugar, for dusting, optional
Preheat your oven to 425 F. Place the pie shell onto a rimmed baking sheet and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the apple butter, egg, sugar, flour, evaporated milk and spices until blended and smooth. Pour into the prepared pie shell. Bake for approx. 10 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 350 F and bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. The top still may be jiggly, but the pie will continue to set as it cools. Cool the pie completely before decorating with fresh whipped cream and cinnamon sugar dusting, if desired.
This warm, comforting and perfectly seasoned dessert is great to share with friends and family during the holidays, or to take to a holiday party.
