Every year on April 7th, we celebrate the World Health Day - a global health awareness day sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO held the First World Health Assembly in 1948.

World Health day seeks to draw attention to a major global health concern each year, and the focus this year is Diabetes.

While the diabetes epidemic is on the rise in many countries in the world, most diabetes cases are actually preventable with healthy lifestyle. Maintaining normal body weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk of diabetes. Also, diabetes can be controlled and managed to prevent complications, and in many cases it can even be reversed.

The good news is that taking measures to prevent and control diabetes doesn’t have to mean living in deprivation – it is about adopting a healthy, balanced, yet tasty diet.

So, since you don’t have to totally give up desserts or take on bland meals, let’s look at some foods that are delicious and would do you a world of good to incorporate into your diet!

Nuts, especially raw nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fish oils will provide healthy fats; fat will slow down the digestive process, meaning blood sugar levels won’t spike as rapidly, plus healthy fats are good for our general health.

Weaver Nut Sweets & Snacks Raw Almonds and Walnuts are a perfect snack, to be enjoyed on their own, added to your cereal, trail mix, or with some dark chocolate as a wonderful and healthy dessert.

Also, nut butters are very satisfying and full of healthy fats, so try them with some fresh apples or celery, on your whole wheat bread or in your smoothies.

Dried fruits are full of health benefits and make delicious snacks.

Weaver Nut Sweets & Snacks Dates have a delightful sweet taste and a texture. They are a great diabetes-friendly snack, plus, they're also jam-packed with antioxidants. Try stuffed dates with pecan or walnut halves; add them to breads and salads, even smoothies.

Or, enhance your typical snack and your meals with Weaver Nut Sweets & Snacks dried fruits such as dehydrated kiwi, papaya, guava, pineapple, or apricots.

Simply add them to your favorite nuts and make your own tasty and healthy trail mix.

Now, we left our favorite for the end – the mighty Chocolate.

Rich in antioxidant flavonoids, dark chocolate, though extravagantly indulgent, may help improve your good and bad cholesterol and reduce your blood pressure, and is a good choice for satisfying your sweet tooth. Dark chocolate is delicious shaved or melted over raspberries, strawberries, or apples for a light and healthy dessert, and at Weaver Nut Sweets & Snacks we have plenty of options for everyone’s taste and needs. As always, moderation is recommended.

Finally, try to eat sweets with your meal, rather than as a separate snack, as sweets and desserts tend to cause your blood sugar to spike when eaten on their own, but not when eaten with other healthy foods.

And, when you eat sweets, make your indulgence count by eating mindfully and paying attention to the flavors and textures, really savoring each little bite – this way you’ll enjoy it more, plus you will be less likely to overeat.
