International Eat an Apple Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in September, and this year it falls on September 16.
Apples are delicious, healthy, and part of the identity of many cultures around the globe. For instance, the American Apple Pie is such a part of this country’s identity that to state something is truly, fundamentally American, we hear people say: “As American As Apple Pie”!
International Eat an Apple Day has its roots in thousands of cultural celebrations and mythologies around the world, honoring this universal fruit. From apple dumplings, to apple custards, to caramel apples, to apple candy, this delightful fruit appears all over the map as part of people’s favorite treats.
There are a lot of proverbs about apples, probably the most famous one being “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. One thing is for sure – an apple is a sweet treat, natural, with no fat and lots of good nutrients.
The best way to celebrate the International Eat an Apple Day is to eat an apple, and there are so many ways to enjoy them. Pick one straight off the tree, or get it from many farmers’ fruit stands, now is the season!
If you like to eat fresh apples, what is your favorite way to do so? Whole? Sliced? Peeled then sliced, or even left as a whole? You could even dip it in peanut butter, caramel, or dust it with cinnamon.
But, not everyone likes to eat fresh apples, so maybe your favorite apple treat is the apple pie, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
