Keeping your diet and nutrition-related New Year’s resolutions can be very challenging.
Often we overwhelm ourselves with huge resolutions, instead of setting a few achievable goals for our health and fitness.
The reality is, most people abandon their New Year resolutions by February. If you’re like most people, you may soon need help with getting back on the wagon. So, perhaps, your key focus needs to be detox and re-motivation - with healthy snacks.
We put together a few ideas to make it easier for you to stay on track and achieve your health goals this year:
To start, do a kitchen cleanse. Many of us get rid of clothing or household knick-knacks we no longer use, but what about cleaning out our pantry and refrigerator? Throw away or donate any products that do not fit your health conscious diet, such as cookies, chips, sodas, white sugar, corn syrup, etc.
Then, restock with healthy options like seasonal veggies and fruits, leave these items in the front of the fridge or out on the counter in a basket for visibility and easy snacking access. This will help when you feel the urge to snack, so you’re not tempted to go look for things that may not be as good for you.
Healthy Easy Food Options to Go with Your New Year’s Resolution:
Chia Seeds are simply amazing, and although very tiny - they are superfoods!
There are a dozen reasons why you should incorporate Chia Seeds into your diet, and have them be one of the main ingredients of your New Year’s Resolution snacks!
Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, packed with antioxidants, can help regulate insulin in the blood, contain no gluten or grains, are rich in minerals (important nutrients to help you maintain a healthy weight), and help to keep you satiated (as they hold 10x their weight in water). Also, tryptophan found in Chia helps regulate appetite and sleep and improve mood.
Here is the recipe for a healthy Chia Pudding:
3 tablespoons chia seeds
1 cup almond milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender; blend until it has a uniform texture, then transfer to a sealed container and chill overnight.
You can serve with a sliced banana and a dash of cinnamon, or add fruit of your choice. For a tapioca-like texture, simply stir all of the ingredients together and allow to chill overnight.
2.Chocolate Peanut Butter Energy Balls
Another simple, no bake recipe with healthy chia, and more! These energy balls make the perfect snack, meal replacement, or even dessert. They are delicious (they taste like a peanut butter cookie!) and packed with protein to keep you full longer.
1 tablespoon of black chia seeds
½ cup of ground flax seed
2 cups of regular or gluten-free rolled oats
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
½ cup of raw honey
½ cup of peanut butter
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder of your choice
½ cup of dark chocolate chips (you can choose sugar-free option)
How to Make:
Add rolled oats, ground flax seed, chia seeds, cinnamon, honey, peanut butter, vanilla extract, and vanilla protein powder to food processor, and pulse until blended (about 7-9 times). Add mixture to a large bowl, add chocolate chips, and stir until well mixed.
Form mixture into 1" balls and place on parchment paper lined baking sheet, cover and place in refrigerator for about 2 hours. Enjoy!
There are many more ways you can use chia seeds. Thanks to their mild flavor and small size, they can be sprinkled on top of salads or toast, added to rice dishes, omelets, cereals, smoothies and shakes.
